Exploring students' experiences of technical and vocational learning in University Technical Colleges during the pandemic

University Technical Colleges (UTCs) are newly established (since 2010–11) technical and vocational secondary schools in England, catering for young people aged 14–19. The focus strongly on delivering vocational, alongside Science, Technology, Engineering Mathematics (STEM)-focused academic, qualifications. colleges have been introduced as a new means of improving education training—a sector which England has faced problems low quality esteem—and wider international context STEM-trained worker shortages. advertised offering state-of-the-art learning, involving access students to the latest equipment technologies key industrial sectors, extensive project-based learning partnership with employers. However, how UTC fared these respects since beginning coronavirus pandemic associated lockdowns 2020? In this paper we report results from survey 252 across two UTCs exploring experiences during exceptional 2019–20 academic year. Findings reveal lost training opportunities pandemic, particularly where courses practical elements relied specific facilities that became inaccessible lockdown. also highlights disruptions apprenticeship arrangements, work experience plans other engagement Students some instances effectively forced stay owing reduced employment school-leavers. We find evidence adapting their aspirations career goals economic circumstances.
